Giants take 2-0 lead over Tigers in Game 3

DETROIT (AP) ? Gregor Blanco hit a run-scoring triple off the wall in right-center field in the second and scored on Brandon Crawford's single as the San Francisco Giants took a 2-0 lead over the Detroit Tigers after three innings in World Series Game 3 on Saturday night.

Having swept the first two games at home, the Giants got off to a quick start against Anibal Sanchez. No team has ever lost the first three games and rebounded to win the title.

Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, following lefties Barry Zito and Madison Bumgarner, allowed three hits in the first three innings and induced two inning-ending, double-play grounders.

While Detroit never trailed during its AL championship series sweep of the New York Yankees, the Tigers have not led in the World Series.

Vogelsong, 2-0 with 1.42 ERA in three postseason starts, has traveled through 10 minor league cities plus two in Japan over the last 15 years, also making winter ball stops at the Arizona Fall League and Venezuela. In between, the 35-year-old has gone 37-38 during parts of eight seasons with the Giants and Pittsburgh.

Sanchez, acquired from Miami in July, showed rust from his 12-day layoff. He walked Hunter Pence on four pitches starting the second. One out later, Blanco pulled a full-count pitch off an advertising board on the fence.

Detroit pulled the infield in ? manager Jim Leyland was criticized by some for leaving his middle infielders back with Game 2 scoreless in the seventh ? and Hector Sanchez struck out. Brandon Crawford, the No. 9 hitter, lofted a single to short center that Austin Jackson overran for an error.

With the crowd quieted and the Tigers' infielders looking dismayed, Sanchez retired Angel Pagan on an inning-ending grounder to first.

Sanchez allowed three hits in the first three innings, struck out four and walked one, throwing 62 pitches ? 31 in the second.

San Francisco, seeking its second title in three years, is brimming with confidence. The Giants entered 8-1 in the postseason when scoring first.

Detroit was 26-25 when facing left-handed starters during the season and 62-49 against righties, according to STATS LLC. The Tigers entered 4-0 at home in the postseason and threatened in the first against Vogelsong.

Quintin Berry walked with one out. Miguel Cabrera, presented with a dark blue and gold crown by Major League Baseball before the game in honor of his Triple Crown, singled to left. But Prince Fielder bounced into a 4-6-3 double play, dropping to 0 for 5 with runners on in the series and 1 for 19 versus righties in the postseason.

Omar Infante hit a broken-bat single with one out in the third and Jackson reached on an infield hit, beating Pablo Sandoval's throw on a four-hopper to third. Berry hit into a 4-6-3 double play on the next pitch.

With the shift to the AL ballpark, Giants manager Bruce Bochy inserted Hector Sanchez as his designated hitter in the No, 8 slot and dropped Crawford to ninth.

Alternating catchers, the Tigers went with Game 1 starter Alex Avila in place of Gerald Laird and made two switches in the outfield. Berry started in left, with Delmon Young moving to DH, and Andy Dirks replaced Avisail Garcia in right.

The gametime temperature of 47 was a 17-degree drop from Game 2. The Tigers' starters wore long sleeves and the Giants' regulars a mixture of long and three-quarters, with only Vogelsong in short sleeves. Four of the six umpires wore gloves, with plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth and Brian O'Nora at first going with bare hands.

Matt Cain, coming off a Game 7 win over St. Louis in the NL championship series, starts for San Francisco in Game 4 on Sunday night. Max Scherzer starts for Detroit, his first appearance since completing the Tigers' ALCS sweep of the Yankees.

NOTES: Sandoval singled in the first and grounded out in the third, leaving him 6 for 9 in the Series. ... Cabrera has reached safely in his first 23 postseason games, two shy of Boog Powell's record, according to STATS LLC. ... Zooey Deschanel, who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Game 4 last year, became only the second person in a decade to perform the national anthem before Series games in consecutive years. John Legend sang it before Game 2 in 2009 and the 2010 opener.

Prepaid credit cards face new rules in Canada ... - Financial Post

OTTAWA ? Ottawa is stepping in with new rules for the largely unregulated prepaid credit card market.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced Wednesday that in the future, issuers of prepaid cards will not be able to impose expiry dates and must be up front about hidden fees and conditions.

The move is part of the government?s expanding code of conduct measures to govern credit and debit transactions, that had previously not applied to the relatively new prepaid market.

While still a small segment of the market, prepaid plastic has become an option for consumers without conventional credit or debit cards, young adults, and for parents who want to introduce their children to using credit while limiting the risk of theft and over-spending.

But the sector has also faced criticism for exorbitant hidden fees that reduced their face value and fooled customers. These can include monthly or annual fees, maintenance costs, as well as ATM charges.

The most notorious example occurred two years ago when Hollywood celebrity Kim Kardashian backed away from endorsing a prepaid card bearing her name after a public outcry over the card?s usage fees, including a close to $60 activation fee.

The card even grabbed the attention of the attorney general of Connecticut.

The new regulations in Canada would require an information box disclosing the fees displayed prominently on the exterior package and other documentation prior to issuance.

A government official said the measures are in response to concerns about some features of prepaid cards issued by large financial institutions, adding that in some products, ?terms, conditions, fees and limitations? were not always made clear.

The official said the government wants to make sure consumers know what they are agreeing to before making the purchase.

Paranormal Activity 4 (2012) ? The Movie Review Warehouse

All these cameras and no mention of sexting? And you call yourself a demon.

What does it say about this franchise that after really enjoying the original entry in the franchise, I arrive at this fourth entry only with the expectation that the film?s lead, Kathryn Newton, would be beautiful. Before heading to watch this, I caught up with the second installment, which was a good thing as it is the one whose plot sets the stage for this one, with a touch of the third (from the same directing pair) thrown in. The second film was dreadful, the third of some interest but derailed by a bad ending; what surprised me here is how the film won me back to some degree.

PA4 is a film that rarely succeeds as a horror film but is salvaged by the charismatic Alex (Newton) and her boyfriend Ben (Matt Shively) who make the first half of the film fun. Through their teenaged eyes, the film takes a technological leap to laptop, iPhone and Xbox cameras. We really are surrounded by cameras these days (well, those in the posh neighborhoods of the PA series anyway) so it feels less arbitrary than the cameras of the previous entries. I don?t know if the film?s logic about the XBox motion sensing thing is accurate, but how it is used is plausible enough.

Unfortunately, like the third film, this takes a nosedive into the end. Though we see through the cameras set up, Alex and Ben casually neglect to watch the footage and thus get insufficiently concerned about the events around them. And even though I?ve watched all the films, the series? demonic logic baffles me. I don?t know exactly why these things are happening, who is gaining from them or who is being punished. The story is set up in a way to indicate that it isn?t just random, so I want more of the motivation. Without that, it is just things happening for the hell of it and it ultimately ruins the stakes, even as you care about the characters.

Curiously, some interesting scenes from the trailer were not included, perhaps a positive trend in trailers to avoid spoilers. Either way, this exceeded my expectations, but that doesn?t count for much any more.

Panama wants to adopt euro alongside dollar

BERLIN - Panama would like to introduce the euro as legal tender alongside the U.S. dollar, President Ricardo Martinelli told German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a visit to Europe.

"In Panama the currency in free circulation is the American dollar and I told the chancellor we are looking for ways for the euro to become another currency of legal circulation and to be accepted in the Panamanian market," President Ricardo Martinelli told a joint news conference with Merkel in Berlin on Monday.

Martinelli provided no details about the switch but he expressed "full confidence" in the German and European economies and said he expected the euro zone debt crisis would soon pass.

Seventeen of the European Union's 27 member states are in the euro zone but euros are also in circulation in a number of non-EU countries, including Kosovo and Montenegro in the Balkans as well as tiny Monaco and Andorra, and in overseas territories.

Panama's dollarized economy - almost 10,000 kilometers from mainland Europe - is one of the fastest growing in Latin America, expanding 10.6 percent last year with help from heavy infrastructure spending including the expansion of the Panama Canal.

Financial markets' fears of a possible meltdown of the common currency have eased since the European Central Bank said it was ready to buy unlimited quantities of sovereign debt to reduce borrowing costs of vulnerable countries such as Spain.

But Merkel, head of the currency bloc's largest economy, has said Europe needs to persevere with tough austerity measures and move towards closer banking, fiscal and political union in order to secure the euro's future.

NPD study finds average display sizes continuing to rise in all areas but laptops and tablets

NPD study finds average display sizes continuing to rise in all areas but laptops and tablets

Not exactly a huge surprise here, but a new study out from NPD DisplaySearch today has confirmed that the trend towards larger screens in continuing at a steady pace in all but a few key areas. The big exception is "mobile PCs," which NPD defines as laptops and tablets for its purposes. That area dropped from a 13.6-inch average in 2010 to 12.1-inch in 2012 (with an ever so slight increase to 12.2-inches projected for 2013), a drop that represents a ten percent decrease overall and is largely attributed to the growth of tablets . All other areas have seen small to significant growth in recent years, with LCD TVs growing 9 percent, mobile phones increasing 38 percent, and portable media players jumping 29 percent. The biggest growth, by far, comes in OLED TVs, which have gone from a mere 15-inch average in 2010 to an average of 55-inches today -- a growth of 267 percent.

The One Thing to Avoid When Buying a Car | Careful Cents

When my ex and I bought our first car together, I remember spending over 3 hours at the dealership to close the deal. The payments were WAY out of our budget, but that didn?t keep them (or us) from ?making it work?.

But this is one of the worst things to do when buying a car. Why?

Because car dealerships need to make a profit, which means their loans come with standard interest rates and commission fees that are tacked onto the final price.

If you don?t do your homework, you could find yourself the victim of hidden fees and ridiculously high or fluctuating interest rates. Take it from my experience and don?t finance your car loan through the dealership.

While it?s very convenient and they?ll pretty much do anything to close the deal, it?s won?t be a sound financial decision in the long run. Instead do your research and use a few of these alternatives methods to finance your car loan.

You have to be careful with any type of loan choice, since not all lenders are created equal ? and there?s always a bit of risk when you intentionally go into debt.

Here are some other options if you?re looking to get an auto loan for a new car.

1. Get a loan from a local credit union or bank

If you are thinking of taking out a car loan, the most cost effective ways to handle this, is to get one from a local community bank or credit union. For the most part, local banks have lower interest rates and since you?ve built up a rapport with them, you?ll have a higher chance of getting approved.

You can even get a discount if you already have an account/loan through the same bank, or sign up for automatic payments.

When I refinanced my auto loan, I got an extra 0.25% discount on my loan rate just for having the payment automatically deducted out of my checking account.

2. Save up and pay a large down payment

Consider treating your car like a house and save up at least 20% of the purchase price in cash, for a down payment. In the past when I?ve bought a new car, I saved up 50% down. But not everyone has the option to do this, so putting at around 20% down is a smart strategy too.

The extra down payment will be your best defense against the massive depreciation that many new cars experience when you drive them off the lot.

It also puts you in a better bargaining position since ?money talks? and waving thousands of dollars in cold hard cash is hard for any car dealer to pass up.

3. Refinance your loan

If you did finance your car loan through the dealership, like I did, you?ll want to refinance the loan as quickly as possible. I waited over 18 months before realizing the interest rate was robbing me blind and decided to talk to my local bank about refinancing.

The process was quick, easy and I started saving money on excess interest payments instantly every month. Not only that, it cut several months off the payment plan of the loan!

You can?t go wrong with refinancing through a local bank or credit union to get a better interest rate.

4. Try creative funding sources

If your bank or credit union won?t give you a loan or offer a refinance deal, you?ll have to look for alternate sources of funding. If you have decent credit, try a peer-to-peer lending network like Lending Club or Prosper.

Or you could also consider taking advantage of a credit card with a balance transfer offer. You might be able to get a low introductory APR of 0% for a period of 6-12 months which could save you hundreds of dollars on interest fees.

Now before you choose any of these other options, remember that they can be risky, and you should be cautious when taking out loans or transferring balances between accounts.

However, if used correctly, you could pay off your car loan in half the time and save a ton of money.

Have you ever financed a new car through the dealership? What was your experience like?

Sparkart: How A Digital Agency Helped Redbox Get Into The Ticketing Business

redboxEarlier this month, Redbox announced that it's going to start selling live event tickets from its ubiquitous red kiosks. That seemed like a smart move for Redbox, which is best-known as a DVD rental service, but it turns out the idea actually came from outside ? specifically from Naveen Jain, CEO of digital agency Sparkart. Jain says the idea came to him when he was on a plane to Chicago, where Janet Jackson and Bon Jovi were both having concerts. (They're both clients of Sparkart, which is also getting into the product business with a website builder called Storyteller.) He ended up sitting next to a Redbox engineer, and they struck up a conversation about the company's business. Near the end of that conversation, Jain asked the important question: Had Redbox ever thought of going into the ticketing business?

Turkey condemns U.N. inertia as Syrian conflict deepens

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Rebels battled to hold onto Syria's main north-south highway on Friday as government forces fought insurgents on several fronts across the country.

The rebels captured an air defense base east of Syria's biggest city, Aleppo, and government forces unleashed air strikes and artillery bombardments on the western city of Homs, activists said.

On the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkey scrambled two fighter jets after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin, the site of fierce fighting between rebels and government forces this week.

Tensions between Ankara and Damascus are worsening at a time when the 19-month-old conflict is intensifying with no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough and growing concerns that the violence could spread across the Middle East.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gave a death toll for Thursday of more than 260 people, including civilians and combatants on both sides, as fighting raged in the capital and the north, west and east of the country.

It said 92 soldiers had been killed on Thursday, one of the highest daily tolls on the government side since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad broke out in March 2011.

The official SANA news agency also reported fighting nationwide and said dozens of rebels, which it called "mercenary terrorists", had been killed.

In Idlib, activists said opposition fighters captured about 400 soldiers and loyalist militiamen this week in Western Jisr al-Shoughour, a hilly agricultural area.

Photos released by the opposition showed dozens of uniformed soldiers sitting on the ground in what appeared to be a hangar.

"Around 400 loyalist troops have been captured. Many of them were poor conscripts who were let go. The more important officers are being interrogated," a rebel source said.

The reports could not be independently verified but they indicate an intensifying conflict, with the daily body counts of the past few weeks far exceeding previous months.

HIGHWAY HELL

The British-based Observatory, which has a network of monitors in Syria, reported fighting at a military barracks close to Maarat al-Nuaman, a town on the highway from Homs to Aleppo in the northwest.

Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, has been contested since July and the rebel capture of Maarat al-Nuaman this week cut the main route for Assad's military to resupply and reinforce it.

Opposition sources said rebels on Thursday halted an armored army column at Khan Sheikhoun which had been sent from Hama to retake Maarat al-Nuaman, 70 km (40 miles) south of Aleppo. They also reported artillery barrages along the highway between Khan Sheikhoun and Maarat in the past 72 hours.

SANA said government forces were trying to clear Aleppo's Karm al-Jabal area of rebels on Friday.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which started out as a popular uprising against four decades of Assad family rule and domination by their Alawite sect and then spiraled into civil war.

Fighting has also spilled over its borders into Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, stoking fears that the war could drag in its neighbors.

Since Syrian bombardments hit Turkish villages last week, Ankara and Damascus have squared off militarily and rhetorically, with Turkey moving troops to the border and threatening to retaliate if there is further cross-border bloodshed.

Turkey infuriated Syria on Wednesday when it forced a passenger plane flying from Russia to Syria to land in Ankara. Turkish authorities said it was carrying Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army, a charge denied by Damascus and Moscow.

Turkey allows rebels sanctuary on its soil and has led calls, along with Western powers and Gulf Arab states, for Assad to step down. The Syrian president counts on the support of Russia and Iran.

Despite the bluster, most analysts believe that neither Syria nor Turkey want matters to get out of hand. The United States and European powers have also shown no desire to intervene militarily, despite much hand-wringing over the bloodshed.

HOMS UNDER FIRE AGAIN

Assad's forces also ramped up air strikes and artillery barrages against Homs on Friday, a day after they took heavy losses trying to overrun the rebel-held Khalidiya district, opposition activists said.

"There are 50 bodies of soldiers and shabbiha (militia) on the streets in Khalidiya and regime troops cannot retrieve them," said Ahmad Tarkawi, a local opposition leader.

"The situation remains tough. The regime is now using a multiple rings tactic to surround Homs."

Homs, 140 km (90 miles) north of Damascus, was the focus of world attention in February when a government siege pulverized rebel-held districts and killed hundreds of fighters and civilians. It is also a gateway to the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean, heartland of Assad's minority Alawite sect.

Video footage showed a six-storey building in Khalidiya flattened by an airstrike.

Shelling and aerial bombardments also hit Sunni Muslim towns near Homs to prevent rebels in the countryside from joining the battle for Homs, opposition activist Abu Yazan said.

Meanwhile, the refugee crisis grew ever more acute, with the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR saying that between 2,000 and 3,000 people were fleeing across borders every day from Syria.

The total number of refugees now stood at more than 340,000, Melissa Fleming, a UNHCR spokeswoman, said in Geneva.

"And now into the winter months, more and more of these people are going to be living in camp situations. So more and more of these people are going to be spending the winter in tents," she said.

Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce BBQ ? Concord, NC ...

One of the most fun and best networking events of the year is the Chamber BBQ which is an annual event sponsored by the Chamber.? This event?offers a great venue, great food and drink and best of all a wonderful opportunity to network with friends and make new friends.?

If you haven?t attended, I would highly recommend that you look for this event next year and get it on your calendar.?

Enjoy some photos from the event!

We are very fortunate in Cabarrus County to have a very proactive Chamber under the leadership of John Cox.? Many people have a stereotypical point of view on Chambers which is fine but truly our Chamber is far from typical.?

Having served on the Board of Directors for many years, I have witnessed first hand how this Chamber works to meet the needs of this business community whether it falls under the typical role of a Chamber or not.? Our Chamber is proactive in stepping up where needed when the time comes.

There are many great programs that happen annually as well including the Leadership Program, the?Governmental Affairs Committee and many others.? All efforts effect the entire business community whether you are a Chamber member or not.?

The Chamber is funded through its memberships and sponsorship of different events.? We need each and every business to consider investing in your local Chamber in order for the efforts to continue.?? Regardless of your ability to participate in events, the Chamber and its staff work for you on efforts that impact your business and its success every day.??

SW Wisconsin Land Sales Update: 3rd Quarter Sales Up But Prices ...

This past summer will long be remembered for the drought that affected much of the country as well as the record high temperatures. ?Perhaps this had some effect on land sales; but when studying the numbers for southwest Wisconsin, it?doesn?t?appear to have had much effect if any. ?Last quarter we saw both the number of sales and the price per acre of rural land inch upward. ?For 3rd quarter we still have increased sales, but the price per acre slipped about 5% over 2011 prices. It?s interesting to note that prices have declined slightly even since the beginning of this year so we are experiencing a dip in the road to recovery as far as prices go.

3rd Qtr Sales Graph

Land buyers continue to be much more active this year than last. ?Five of the seven counties in this area saw an increase in the number of sales with Grant County leading the way. ?Overall land transactions are up 47% for the 3rd quarter compared to the same period last year.

Only Vernon County realized an increase in price per acre for the 3rd quarter. ?The other 6 counties studied experienced a decline in price per acre. An interesting side note to pricing involves the list to sale price ratio. ?As the number of sales goes up, so has the list to sale ratio from 89% to 92%. ?I think this reflects the willingness of sellers to bring their asking price more in line with current market conditions. ?Buyers have spoken loud and clear with their dollars during the first 3 quarters of this year. ?They are ready, willing, and able to buy parcels that represent a good value.

Below is a summary of land sales by county (data from SCWMLS & WiREx).
