Betty White's 90th Birthday: 4 highlights (The Week)

New York ? The Hot in Cleveland star is feted by Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, and even President Obama in an NBC special in honor of her decades-long career

America's Golden Girl rang in her 90th birthday with a splashy NBC special Monday night. Amy Poehler, Mary Tyler Moore, Hugh Jackman, and Tina Fey turned out to toast ? and roast ? White, recalling favorite memories from the star's seven decades in show business, praising her talent, and, more often than not, cracking wise about her old age. (Watch a clip below.) Here, four highlights from the big birthday bash:

1. President Obama, the stand-up comic
In a taped message to White, President Barack Obama delivered a cheeky birthday greeting: "I can't believe you're 90 years old. Will you please produce a copy of your long-form birth certificate?" Look,?says Margaret Eby at?Flavorwire. The "'birth certificate' gag is a little tired," but Obama's cameo "was charming, as was the closing shot of him putting a picture of White next to framed ones of Michelle and the kids."

2. The many, many old lady jokes
An entire red carpet's worth of celebrities dropped by to deliver glowing speeches in honor of White, says Sarah Anne Hughes at The Washington Post. But more often than not, they were there "for a night of jokes about age." Amy Poehler kicked things off by calling White a pioneer: "I call her a pioneer because 90 years ago she literally [traveled] to California on stage coach." Carol Burnett chimed in, "Like many of you, I first heard about Betty White from the wonderful stories told to me by my grandmother."

3. "Thank You for Being a Friend"
The special ended with a star-studded singalong, with those in attendance serenading White with a rendition of the Golden Girls theme song, "Thank You for Being a Friend." After a standing ovation, a clearly moved White "ended the night on a high note," says Hollywood Life. She said, "To be able to spend a lifetime in the business you love with the people you love ? and get away with it ? is marvelous!"

4. A preview of White's next gig
The special concluded with a preview of a new prank show produced by White, called Betty White's Off Their Rockers, which features senior citizens playing hidden camera tricks on youngsters. The "feel-good" series puts a fresh spin on the tired prank show genre, says The Huffington Post, because none of the victims in the clip actually got mad at the senior pranksters. Instead, the common response was "amusement, delight, or a shaking of the head with a smile." Actually, says Verne Gay at Newsday, this show looks?"worse than awful, painful, and sad." It was embarrassing, and "White's spectacular career shouldn't be reduced to this."

Your Birdsong Stays on My Mind

Advances | Mind & Brain Cover Image: January 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

A new app may help birders identify species just by sound

Image: Stephen Schwartz/iStockphoto

Birdsong?or, more technically, vocalization? is one way that die-hard bird-watchers identify different kinds of birds in the field, along with the more traditional visual markers. Yet how do you take written notes on the sounds that birds make? You could use conventional musical notation, but many bird-watchers aren?t musicians. Field guides often resort to vague phrases such as ?far-carrying melancholic song? or the mysterious ?tee-do-do-eet.? Also, how can birders identify strains of birdsong they may hear in the field?

Enter two enterprising Ecuadorian researchers who think they may have a solution to both problems. Hugo J?come Andrade and David Parra Puente have developed software that ?transforms sound into a sequence of numbers that can be readily converted and printed in a QR (Quick Response) bar code.? They debuted a prototype version of the software last November at a meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, where attendees were able to see firsthand how the system imports recorded sounds and transposes them into a QR bar code and then ?decodes? it using a conventional bar code scanner.

The next step for J?come Andrade and Parra Puente is to adapt their software into an app for smartphones, a kind of mobile catalogue in a searchable e-book format. That would be the ultimate pocket field guide for bird-watchers, wouldn?t it? Instead of lugging around lots of pricey and heavy equipment, enthusiasts could happily go about their bird-watching business armed with just a mobile phone with a built-in camera. If they heard a bit of birdsong, they could look it up on the smartphone app. Their phone, in turn, would display a picture of the bird (for visual identification) and a bar code that could be played so that watchers could verify the birdsong matches that they just heard. ?No more confusing tweeting sound descriptions!? J?come Andrade and Parra Puente declared in their lay-language summary.

Yahoo searching for new board members: source (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Yahoo Inc is searching for new members for its board of directors, following its hiring of a new chief executive, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The struggling Internet company also disclosed on Friday that new CEO Scott Thompson will receive a compensation package that could be worth as much as $27 million.

Yahoo announced on Wednesday that Thompson, the president of eBay online payment division PayPal, would join Yahoo as its new CEO.

Thompson replaces Carol Bartz, who was fired from the top job at Yahoo four months ago, as Yahoo began a "strategic review" in which discussions have included the possibility of being sold, taken private or broken up.

With Thompson taking the reins, Yahoo will begin looking to replace some of the members of its board of directors, according to the person familiar with the matter.

A Yahoo spokeswoman declined to comment on the potential board changes.

Asked about potential changes to the composition of Yahoo's board in an interview on Wednesday, Thompson said it was "premature" to make any announcements.

"That's something I'll talk about with the board at a future date," he said.

Yahoo's board, which includes co-founder Jerry Yang and Chairman Roy Bostock, has come under heavy criticism from several large shareholders, including activist hedge fund Third Point.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news of Yahoo's plans for its board on Friday, the company has retained executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles International Inc to help with the process. Yahoo director Patti Hart is leading the search, the report said, citing anonymous sources.

A Web pioneer in the early 1990s, Yahoo has struggled to maintain its relevance and advertising revenue in the face of competition from rivals Google Inc and Facebook.

According to a regulator filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, Thompson will receive an annual base salary of $1 million, along with a target annual bonus of 200 percent of base salary.

Thompson will also receive an annual equity grant for 2012 with a target value of $11 million, as well as a $5 million "one-time inducement" grant. Thompson's employment agreement also provides for a "make-whole" bonus of $1.5 million in cash and $6.5 million in restricted stock units to compensate for what he left on the table at PayPal.

Waverly mayor Reed announces resignation

WAVERLY -- Waverly Mayor Dale Reed announced his resignation Tuesday night, just days into his latest term.

Reed announced his resignation before other elected officials were sworn into office at the beginning of the Waverly City Council meeting.

Reed ran unopposed for re-election in November. He did not offer a reason for his resignation, but told attendees he thought he had served to the best of his ability. He left the meeting shortly after the announcement without any further comment.

Reed was serving as council president in 2006 when he was appointed to the mayor's post after former Mayor Bill Kelly resigned. He was replaced by current president of the board, Greg Kempton.

Kempton, who had served as the city's At-large representative and had been re-elected president in an unopposed race in November, will be mayor of Waverly for the next two years. He will be required to run in the next primary election in 2014 to keep the seat. Kempton said he wasn't surprised by the resignation but that he was surprised by the timing.

Replacing Kempton could prove difficult, as council was split three against three as to whom to appoint to fill the position.

After Kempton was sworn in as mayor, Joyce Thompson, 1st Ward, Dick Demlow, 2nd Ward, and Tom Patterson, At-large, supported a nomination of Patterson to serve as council president after Kempton's departure. New 5th Ward Councilman Brian Blakeman joined his father, Forest Blakeman, 4th Ward, and Bret Bevens, 3rd Ward, in voting against Patterson, and Bevens nominated Forest to serve as president. The trio voted in favor of that motion, but Thompson, Demlow and Patterson voted it down.

Demlow then moved that the council approve Patterson as president for Tuesday's meeting only so it could conduct business, but that also failed in a 3-3 deadlock along the same voting lines.

The council eventually unanimously agreed to allow Thompson to serve as president pro-tem for the Tuesday meeting. The face-off set the stage for another disagreement.

The council had to take nominations to fill Kempton's at-large seat vacancy. Thompson, Demlow and Patterson nominated former councilman Steve Fisher, who chose not to run in 2011 for the seat the younger Blakeman has. Fisher said he would agree to serve if appointed, but both Blakemans and Bevens voted against it.

Bevens then nominated former council member Jonathan Claytor, who in 2006 at age 23 resigned from the council. His nomination was supported by the Blakemans, but defeated by Demlow, Thompson and Patterson.

The council has 30 days to appoint a seventh council member to replace Kempton on the board and to select a new member to serve as council president. If members don't, Kempton in his new mayoral capacity will have to make the appointment.

"I really do want council to make that appointment, and I believe they can," Kempton said, hinting that the council could call a special meeting to discuss and reach an agreement on the issue.

In the meantime, Kempton said his biggest issue will be tackling the city's budget, which needs to be cut by about $500,000, according to Auditor Harvey Whaley's estimates.

"The general fund and building the budget is going to be my number one (priority)," Kempton said.

Dakota Fanning lives a 19thC scandal in 'Effie' (AP)

WEST WYCOMBE, England ? It was a love triangle that shocked Victorian England ? a tale of passion and duty, tradition and freedom seething beneath corsets and waistcoats. Now it's coming back to life on screen, with a 21st-century behind-the-scenes drama thrown in.

"Effie," which features 17-year-old Dakota Fanning in one of her first adult roles, tells the story of the disastrous marriage between 19th-century art critic John Ruskin and his young bride Effie Gray. It was a train wreck of a union, a collision of opposites that ended after Effie fell truly, madly, scandalously in love with wild-eyed young artist John Everett Millais.

"It's the ultimate bad marriage," said Emma Thompson, the Academy Award winning actress and writer behind "Effie"`s screenplay.

She said she was drawn to the story by its "archetypal quality."

"It happens to be a costume drama, but you could be doing a story with this kind of complexity and oddness in any period," Thompson said on the set of "Effie" at West Wycombe House, an exuberantly ornate 18th-century mansion in the Chiltern Hills northwest of London.

She's not alone in seeing the story's potential. Two writers have come forward to accuse Thompson of copying their work, claims she and her producers deny.

Playwright Gregory Murphy alleges similarities with his play and screenplay "The Countess." He has claimed that "Effie" is "distinctly related to my own screenplay in its timeframe, character development, structure and tone."

American writer Eve Pomerance maintains the script has passages similar to her own unproduced screenplay, "The Secret Trials of Effie Gray."

"Effie" producer Donald Rosenfeld accuses Pomerance and Murphy of "fortune hunting," and has hit back with lawsuits in a U.S. court against both writers, seeking a declaration by a judge that there are no copyright issues involved."

"We've never had any contact with these people," he said. "They did not have anything to do with the movie."

Thompson happily admits she is not the first writer to tell Effie's tale. There have been several film, television and stage versions, and Keira Knightley is reportedly in talks to play Effie in another movie, "Untouched."

"That always happens," Thompson said, sipping a mug of tea between takes. "It's a zeitgeist thing. There hadn't been a Jane Austen movie for 30 years when we started to prep `Sense and Sensibility'" ? the 1995 film for which she won a screenwriting Oscar. "Suddenly there were like 14 on the go."

Ruskin married Gray in 1848, when he was 29 and she was 19. On the couple's wedding night, something about his bride ? historians still debate exactly what ? so horrified Ruskin that the union was not consummated. Ruskin maintained it was her personality that had put him off, but Gray later wrote that her husband "had imagined women were quite different to what he saw I was."

"We're talking about a girl who is objectified, and then disappoints a man by being real," said director Richard Laxton, a British television veteran making his feature-film directing debut. "If that isn't relevant, I don't know what is."

Divorce was illegal, so Effie suffered for years before falling in love with Millais, a leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of young painters whose bold style shocked and excited the Victorian art establishment.

Effie sought an annulment, which was granted on the grounds of her husband's "incurable impotency" ? though Thompson thinks Ruskin's dysfunction was more emotional than erectile. She married Millais and went on to have eight children. But love came at a price. Gray was barred from events attended by Queen Victoria and ostracized by sections of society.

Fanning said that despite Effie's anguish, it's not a depressing film.

"It's about her journey back to becoming a whole self again," Fanning said.

"She's such a strong woman ? and such a modern woman for the time in which she lived."

The filmmakers hope the story of a woman trying to escape an oppressive marriage will resonate with modern audiences.

Thompson says her main inspiration for the film was Phyllis Rose's book "Parallel Lives," which analyzes five dysfunctional Victorian marriages. Thompson was struck that in each case, the problems appeared "emblematic of emotional disconnection in our country generally, but particularly between the sexes" ? a gap modern society has not fully closed.

"In some ways we've come a long way ? think of dental work," Thompson said.

"But the communication between the sexes is not good enough, as far as I can see, and needs to be improved. Generally speaking, you look at the culture of the masculine and the culture of the feminine, and you think `Never the twain shall meet.'"

Producer Rosenfeld worked on several Merchant Ivory films, and "Effie" strives for the same audience-wooing alchemy of modest budget, smart script, handsome costumes and classy cast.

The film's roster of British thespians includes Thompson as Lady Eastlake, a forward-thinking arts patron who befriended Effie. Thompson's real-life husband, Greg Wise, plays Ruskin, with Tom Sturridge as Millais and Julie Walters, James Fox, Derek Jacobi and David Suchet in supporting roles.

Despite fears the plagiarism claims might delay production, filming on "Effie" took place this fall in London, Scotland, Venice and at West Wycombe, which stands in for London's Royal Academy in a key dinner-party scene. Producers hope to premiere the film in May.

Laxton has been working on a snappy modern parallel to describe this twisted Victorian tabloid tale.

"Young girl falls in love with Simon Cowell, goes off to a festival, realizes there is this other band member, then runs back to Simon," he said. "He takes off to Scotland and locks them in a recording studio and she falls in love with the young lead singer."

And they live, more or less, happily ever after.

(AP) ? The trial of Hosni Mubarak resumed Monday amid speculation that a recent acquittal of policemen tried in the killings of protesters could be a prelude to the dismissal of charges against the ousted Egyptian leader.

Mubarak is charged with complicity in the killing of more than 800 protesters during the uprising that toppled his 29-year regime last year.

The 83-year-old ailing Mubarak was brought by helicopter to the Cairo courthouse from a hospital where he is held in custody. He was then taken into the defendants' cage on a gurney, wearing dark sunglasses and covered by a green blanket.

Another Cairo court on Thursday acquitted five policemen of charges of killing five protesters in the capital's el-Sayedah Zeinab district during the Jan. 25-Feb. 11 uprising. The court said three of the defendants were not at the site of the killings while the other two fired on protesters in self defense.

The ruling angered families of the victims. Activists demanded that the killers be brought to justice and complained that similar cases are languishing in courts in several Egyptian cities.

On trial with Mubarak are his two sons, Gamal, his one-time heir apparent, and Alaa, along with the ousted leader's former security chief and six top police commanders. The Mubaraks face additional corruption charges in the same case.

The trial began Aug. 3 but has since been bogged down in procedural matters, including a demand by lawyers for the victims that the presiding judge, Ahmed Rifaat, be removed. That request alone took a separate court about three months to rule on.

Monday's hearing was adjourned until Tuesday, when the court is due to hear from the prosecution.

The acquittal of the police officers in el-Sayedah Zeinab and the relatively long time the Mubarak trial is taking before even starting to deal with the core of the charges against him have led many activists to brand the proceedings a farce, organized by the generals who took over power when the longtime leader was ousted.

The generals are led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Mubarak's defense minister for the last 20 years he spent in office.

The activists believe the generals remain beholden to the Mubarak regime, and only placed the former president and his two sons under arrest after mounting pressure by protesters. The Mubaraks were arrested in April, two months after the ouster of the regime. Activists believe this was long enough for the three to conceal evidence of their alleged involvement in either the killings or corruption.

Youth protesters, police clash across Bahrain (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? Shi'ite youths chanting slogans against Bahrain's royal family clashed with riot police across the Gulf island kingdom Saturday, trying to block highways in a second day of protests, residents said.

"Death to Al-Khalifa, Death to Al-Saud," protesters shouted, also targeting the Saudi ruling family, as they were chased backed into mostly Shi'ite Muslim villages by police who fired teargas, the residents said.

"The protests are not as big as the demonstrations on Friday. Police are focusing on trying to force protesters back into villages," one resident told Reuters.

Activists said in Twitter messages that a youth died after being injured in clashes in Sitra village. There was no immediate report on state media about the incident.

Inspired by "Arab Spring" uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, thousands of mainly Shi'ite Bahrainis took to the streets in February and March demanding curbs on the power of the Sunni Muslim Al-Khalifa family and an end to perceived discrimination.

The broader pro-democracy movement was suppressed with the help of military forces brought in from neighboring Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. But small, low-level protests have persisted on an almost daily basis.

Authorities said Saturday they had arrested an unspecified number of "saboteurs" for throwing petrol bombs at police during a protest Friday in the village of Nuwaidrat, near Sitra, south of the capital Manama, the state news agency BNA reported.

In November, a government-appointed commission of international jurists found evidence of systematic abuses against detained protesters.

The government has promised to implement the report's recommendations, which the U.S. Congress has linked to its approval of a $53 million arms sale to Western-allied Manama.

Bahrain has set up a body to implement the recommendations, including stopping rights abuses and punishing those responsible as well as retraining police and security forces. But opposition groups have cast doubt on the authorities' commitment to reform.

Saturday, the independent daily Al Wasat said on its website that the head of the body, Ali al-Salih, had handed in his resignation. There was no official confirmation of the report.

Bahrain is important to Western interests in the Middle East because it hosts the U.S. Fifth Fleet and faces Shi'ite giant Iran on the other side of the Gulf. Iran has denied Bahraini government accusations that it has incited the protests.

Remembering the New Years Eve Tornado

by Spencer Ernst

KMOV.com

Updated Saturday, Dec 31 at 5:42 PM

SUNSET HILLS (KMOV) ? Residents of Sunset Hills gathered Saturday to relfect on the anniversary of the 2010 New Years Eve tornado, which ravished the city.

The city park?s American flag, found among the debris of the winter tornado, was unveiled and will hang along the stairway of the Sunset Hills Community Center.

On December 31, 2010, a strong line of storms raced through the St. Louis Metropolitan area, producing eleven weak tornadoes, and one EF3 strong tornado- which struck the city of Sunset Hills just before noon.

According to the National Weather Service Office in St. Louis, the tornado started in Murphy, Missouri near Delmar Gardens on Arbor Road; it gained strength and followed along eastbound Highway 30, hitting St. Paul Parish and homes within the Forest Knoll Subdivision. The tornado crossed the Meramec River and caused damage to homes on West Watson Road in Sunset Hills. ?

At its peak wind intensity of 150 miles per hour, the EF3 tornado struck Watson Trail Park, uprooting multiple trees and causing extensive damage to several homes on West Watson Road, near Lindbergh Boulevard, and on Court Drive. The SSM Medical Center on Lindbergh suffered severe damage.

The tornado weakened to an EF2 as it made its way northeast of Sunset Hills, eventually dissipating in Crestwood.

Officials say the tornado had a total path of 6.7 miles, and a width of a quarter mile during its peak.

St. Louis Police say one woman died several days later of internal injuries, after her car was slammed into a wall off Highway 141 in Fenton.

Look out featherweights, neophyte Jimy Hettes crushes Nam Phan at UFC 141

LAS VEGAS - The UFC must have a lot of faith in Jimy Hettes because it rolled the dice by putting the 24-year-old on the pay-per-view portion of UFC 141. Hettes made the bosses look smart by putting on a three-round exhibition of grappling, takedowns, submissions, and ground and pound on his way to an easy win over Nam Phan, 30-25, 30-25 and 30-26.

Hettes, 24, only had one UFC fight under his belt and he was taking on a grizzled veteran of the sport in Phan. He came out strong with takedowns 16 and 35 seconds into the fight. From there, Hettes used trip takedowns and judo throws to dump Phan (17-10, 1-2 UFC) on his head whenever he wanted.

On the ground, Hettes (11-0, 2-0 UFC) shifted between working for submissions and pounding away at Phan's head was super accurate punches.
